1.- Utkatasana: What is it?

Utkatasana, or chair pose, is a powerful standing Yoga Asana that requires balance, stability, and strength. The arms are extended up along the ears, while the knees are bent as if sitting on a chair.

Traditionally, utkatasana is believed to activate the svadisthana chakra and as such is associated with creativity and determination. Stimulating this chakra through utkatasana is believed to encourage inner acceptance and promote focus and productivity.

2.- Utkatasana: Etymology and Practice

2.1.- Meaning

Utkatasana means ‘strong posture’: Utkata, which means ‘exceeding the usual measure, immense, gigantic’ Asana, which means ‘posture’. This asana is often known as the chair pose, because it seems as if we are sitting on an invisible chair. Although in reality it is more of a throne.

2.2.- Instructions

Begin in mountain pose, with your big toes touching.

Inhale, slightly bend your knees and raise your arms above your head.

Pull your shoulder blades down and your navel in (don’t collapse into your lower back).

Lift your chest up, rising through your heart.

Breathe while holding the pose.

5.- Utkatasana: Contraindications and Precautions

Utkatasana: Contraindicaciones y Precauciones

People with high blood pressure should refrain from raising their arms, alternatively you can keep your palms on your hips. If you have knee conditions, you should not bend your knees too much. You can perform the pose with your back against the wall. If you have flat feet, curl your toes.

Avoid this position if you have a prolapsed uterus or are in your first trimester of pregnancy.

Utkatasana is a safe position, but should be performed with caution if you suffer from knee, hip, and shoulder joint problems.

It should also be done with some precautions in those who suffer from headaches, insomnia problems or very low blood pressure.

Watch out for recent or chronic injuries to your back, hips, knees, or shoulders.
