Definition of Japa:
The word Japa refers to the repetition, usually of a Mantra. This repetition is a meditation technique to cut off the discursive mind and still the mind, substituting thoughts for Mantras.
Repetition (Japa) of a Mantra can be practiced in different ways: by chanting the Mantra, reciting it in a soft tone of voice, or performing the repetition mentally, without speaking. In principle this repetition or Japa without words is what is considered the most powerful form of repetition.
The practice of repetition (Japa) of Mantras can be done in different ways:
– With other people singing in meetings called Kirtan
– A person alone as a method of meditation.
– Doing the repetition in silence doing any activity.
In India it is common to recite Japa using a rosary called Mala (Japa-mala).
The practice of “praying” repeatedly is common to multiple religions, although in India it is considered a form of meditation and takes on another connotation.
