Bhujangasana, the powerful and well-known posture of the Cobra

por Enmanuel Torras Mata

1.- Bhujangasana: What does it mean?

In Sanskrit, Bujanga means cobra, so the translation of Bhujangasana is “cobra pose”. Performing this Asana bears a resemblance to the cobra position, just before attacking.

It is a gentle backbend, performed as part of the Sun Salutation sequence.

As long as this Asana causes tension in the lower back, the elbows can remain bent in an intermediate pose, known as Ardha Bhujangasana.

To achieve maximum awareness in this posture, the hands should be placed as close to the torso as possible, with the arms straight, maintaining the backward bending forcefully, but without pressure. The optimal execution time is 7 minutes sustained. You can follow a mantra during the performance to free your mind.

2.- Everything you need to know about Bhujangasana

2.1.- What is it?

Bhujangasana is a fundamental yoga posture for activating the base of the spine. The Gheranda Samhita states that by practicing it you increase the heat of the body, eliminating (almost) all diseases.

Bhujangasana awakens Kundalini

Bhujangasana is practiced lying down, extending the legs and raising the torso with the support of the hands and arms. It increases the mobility of the spine and strengthens the muscles, so that in the long run it will relieve back pain. Also, by performing this Asana you will open the chest and mobilize and strengthen the front of the body.

2.2.- Bhujangasana strengthens the Anahata chakra

Activating the Chakras through Yoga is a way to achieve calm and inner balance. Chakras are a part of our body, both physical and spiritual, that we must take into account if we want to ascend in our spirituality.

We will see the results of this activation work reflected in a physical and mental improvement, thus improving our attitude towards ourselves and towards the environment.

Bhujangasana potencia el chakra Anahata

“Anahata Chakra represents the center of our Being. From this center of power where the heart is located, emanates the purest and most sincere feeling of Love, and it is the gateway to God.”

The fourth Chakra is Anahata, associated with the color green and the element of Air; It is the intermediate Chakra between the upper and lower Chakras. The heart resides in Anahata, and from this center emanate the purest and most sincere feelings of Love, without form or limits. Its openness opens us to a higher experience of our own life, and encourages us to maintain a more spiritual life.

3.- Technique and execution time for Bhujangasana

The practice consists of lying on your stomach; then we will press the palms against the ground at shoulder height. Then stretch your arms in an arched manner and finally look forward, raising your head as much as you can without forcing yourself. It is a quick technique to perform and practice at the time of its execution.

As far as time is concerned, to perform this exercise correctly, you should do it for at least 30 seconds, as we have explained previously.
